Give a willing colleague a suitable anonymised or fictional handover and ask what they would do next. A record is useful when someone without the original conversation can act from it. This is a review exercise, not a claim that practitioner interviews or customer testing have already occurred.
Ask the reader to reconstruct the next action
Do not explain the whole Job before the reader begins; that removes the very context gap you want to inspect. Provide only the information that an authorised replacement person would normally receive.
| Question | Record the result |
|---|---|
| What was completed? | Clear / unclear / missing, with the relevant wording |
| What remains? | Reader's description of remaining scope |
| What blocks progress? | Dependency or confirmation still needed |
| Who owns the next decision? | Named person or missing responsibility |
| What should the customer expect? | Actual promise or unresolved wording |
Look for assumptions that only the first person knows
Examples include 'bring the usual part', 'same entrance' or 'finish the rest'. Replace them with the information needed for the next attendance, or point to an accessible supporting record. Do not add technical conclusions that were never recorded.
Check the reader's role and view. A link to information they cannot access is not a successful handover, even if the detail exists somewhere in the business account.
Revise and repeat with a bounded conclusion
Record what clarification was needed, update the brief and repeat the relevant questions. Keep the finding concrete: 'the next reviewer could identify the blocker' is more defensible than claiming the template prevents all handover errors.
If you publish real examples or feedback, obtain permission and explain how the material was selected. Use the reusable template as a starting point, then retain only fields that support your actual work.
